The incredibly pretty town of Nieuwoudtville, its streets lined with historical sandstone buildings, lies just inside the Northern Cape border between Vanrhynsdorp and Calvinia, just off the R27.

Nieuwoudtville is extremely popular during the wild flower season.  Due to its unique placement in the Karoo plain known as the Bokkeveld, where the Hantam Karoo meets the Cape Fynbos floral region, it has a reputation as the bulb capital of the world.

The gorgeous Neo-Gothic sandstone church forms the heart of the picturesque town. Its botanical garden is also usually filled with flowering bulbs. Visitors can visit many of the outlying farms during flower season, where people make their living from sheep, wheat and rooibos tea farming. Just outside town you will find the Nieuwoudtville waterfall, decidedly underrated despite its being one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the country.

Papkuilsfontein is 23km from Nieuwoudtville, on the gravel road over the Botterkloof and Pakhuis passes on the way to Clanwilliam. Soak up the peace and tranquility of this beautiful farm while staying in the old, beautifully restored stone cottages, with your own private setting surrounded by fynbos. View the awesome canyon and its 100m waterfall. In spring, enjoy the world-renowned flowers in this Serengeti of the floral kingdom.

Experience the rich birdlife, fauna and authentic San rock art. Swim in the cool waters of a natural rock pool or in the pool at the cottages, which was built to be reminiscent of a farm dam. Hike the trails through sandstone rock formations, and don't forget to bring your mountain bike or your 4x4.
